Configure Reverse Lookup Zone

Reverse Lookup Zone is part of DNS feature that really help during network troubleshooting. Example: Need to get hostname information based on IP Address.

Below show the nslookup result if Reverse Lookup Zone is not configure.

Steps:

  • Expand the AD01. Select the Reverse Lookup Zones. Right Click and click New Zone.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • Enter the Network ID (Network Segment). Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.
  • Below show the Reverse Lookup Zone successfully configure.
  • Expand Forward Lookup Zones > [Domain Name]
  • Select the record. Right Click > Properties.
  • Tick “Update associated pointer (PTR) record”. Click Apply and OK.
  • Select the zone under Reverse Lookup Zones. Refresh the zone. The record is update automatically.
  • Below show the nslookup on IP Address is work.

Configure DNS

Early setup AD DS, the DNS features is enable by default. The domain controller currently didn’t have an internet connection. The DNS value is set to loopback ip address 127.0.0.1

Steps:

  • From Start Menu > Windows Administrative Tools > Open the DNS.
  • Select the AD. Right Click > Click Properties.
  • Click on Forwarders > Edit…
  • Enter the Public DNS and click OK.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Now the domain controller have the internet connection.
